For Memorial Day weekend we went to visit Ed & Jeanette and her family in Long Island. I know we had a great time, as always, but I'm afraid its been so long that I don't remember everything about it, so I'll just talk about the things I do remember.
I know we left early Saturday morning because we had too much to do Friday, and if you don't leave by early afternoon, you have to go late so you don't get caught in NYC traffic. So, we got up there around late morning, and after hanging out around the house for a little while, we drove to the eastern (Atlantic) coast of Long Island about 45 minutes (?) away to see the house they wanted to buy. It was a beautiful house about 75 yards from the water in a really nice neighborhood. Plus, it has a barn in the back yard where Ed can house his rabbit herd. Pretty sweet!
After that, we drove through some nice towns to get to Fire Island National Seashore, but since that is on our national Park list, I'll save that for tomorrow.
That evening Ed, Jeanette's dad, her brother Tommy, and Tommy's friend, and I all went fishing for striped bass in an inlet on the Long Island Sound side of the island near her house, while the ladies and Jackson all stayed nearby at a nice park. We were fishing with these worms - I forgot what they called them, but they were like enormous marine millipedes with HUGE pinchers that stick out when you squeeze their heads. They were pretty freakin nasty looking. Unfortunately, only Tommy's friend (sorry - I forgot his name) caught a couple. Both were just under the 28" minimum to keep, but they were impressive fish nonetheless. I didn't expect to catch anything since I was really just practicing with my new fly rod, but we had fun anyway. Next time.
Ed doing more drinking than fishing.
While we were fishing, Sarah gave Jackson his 1st ride on a swing. By all accounts, he loved it.
about sun down we called it quites and went back to the park where we'd planned to get the charcoal going on the grill, but the ladies were waiting by the car since the park closed. So, we just went back to their house for dinner and to celebrate Jeanette's 30th birthday! She wasn't very excited about it.

Sunday we hung out around the house a bit trying to work out some of the details of our upcoming trip to Alaska. After lunch we went walking through a very nice state park near their house, called Caleb Smith State Park. I have no idea who Caleb Smith was because all of the buildings were closed, but it was a nice park anyway.
That evening we drove home. Because of expected traffic I went a different way than normal - big mistake. I missed a turn and suddenly found myself in traffic in Manhattan. We eventually found the Holland Tunnel and got home (thank god for GPS's), without too much of a delay.
We had a great weekend and are really looking forward to our trip to Alaska in August.
