We arrived later in the day and the park office was already closed for the day. We happened to see a Park Ranger and asked him if we could camp at the park. We set up our tent and then Sarah fed Jackson while Lincoln and I walked to the river a couple hundred feet away. It's a beautiful, clear mountain stream.
Evening sunlight illuminating our path.
One was called “High Knob Vista” and another was “Canyon Vista”. When we got out at the High Knob Vista, we let Lincoln out too. We didn’t bother to put his leash on because he has been so good about staying close and plus he really needed to be able to run and no one else was there. Well….Lincoln DID run and went off exploring on his own. He was probably chasing some kind of animal. After several minutes….which felt like hours….he came running up. He was panting and out of breath and was so tired he could barely jump back up to get in the truck.
There were several trails and dirt roads, waterfalls, a rock garden, and a large swift flowing creek with large rocks and very scenic views.
The park is named “World’s End” because the topography. Seven mountain ranges converge on the point and the idea is that people seem to have the sensation of being at the ultimate ends of the earth.
There was a nice man that was camping not far from us at this park. At first I was a bit afraid of him because….well….he looked a little scary with a long scruffy gray beard and wild crazy and untamed gray hair (picture a ZZ Top impersonator), big loose clothes with sweatpants on and shorts over top of his sweat pants. He came over to our campsite to make small talk a couple of times and told us that the International Space Station was going to be orbiting at 9:13pm right over our campsite. After Jackson went to sleep in the tent, we made our dinner of chicken sausage on a hotdog bun. We again looked at the map to plan our route for the next day and then around 9:10pm we started looking up at the sky to watch for the space station. Around 9:15pm….sure enough, we saw the space station orbiting. It was pretty amazing how bright it was (SO much brighter than a normal satellite!) and how fast it was moving! Of course….a few minutes afterwards…our “new friend” made his way back over to make sure we saw it. Soon after, Jason and I joined Jackson in the tent. I read for a little while and I finally finished my book (The Secret Life of Bees). (a little side note: the book was just ok…it certainly was not one of those books that you just can’t put down….at least for me, it wasn’t….but now I do want to see the movie because I have heard that IT was pretty good). Thanks for that book review, Sarah!
It got nice and cold that night. World's End State Park was one of, if not our favorite state park that we visited on the trip. The place was beautiful. I wish we'd had more time there. We'll definitely come back here to hike, fish, and camp.
